Heaven for the Elite, Hell for Rank-and-Files

Even if you can earn more money doing something else that you are not too crazy about, you will always wonder what'd happen if you had given what you love to do a try.

I have chosen to do something I wasn't 100% into it for exactly the same reason, so I understand completely why these athletes don't mind at all the cost and inconveniences of the road to do what they love.

Now looking back I'd never counsel anybody to choose something practical over what he loves, because life is full of surprises. Your prorities and choices will change over time, but it's important to go for the first love, so to speak. Even if your first love turns out to be the wrong choice, you'd always have time to make amend because you still have youth on your side, and most importantly, you won't have regret.

On the other hand, if you didn't go for first love out of fear or practical consideration, the regret is always with you. Some people even abandoned their current profession and changed career because of this, and it's far more difficult to do in your mid thirties or mid forties.

Of course What I don't recommend is being a bum into the twenties whie trying to figure out what one loves to do, but athletes know what they want at a very early age.

When children start to become adults, and enter high school, parents often advise their children to set off into prestigious fields- medicine, law, journalism, to name a few. And unless showing astounding athletic ability, a child is often steered away from professional sports. But the few with enormous potential in sports, rarely step their foot upon tennis. After all, tennis is a lonely occupation, where every player is your opponent, every player your enemy, every player your rival. Tennis has, though, seen players who have succeeded, and others, who were not so fortunate.

If you're a Serena, Venus, Henin, Clijsters, Sharapova, and even lesser known players like Stosur, Jankovic, and Wozniacki, life on the tour, though demanding, is sweet as a carrot cake fresh from the oven. But go down the ranks and their life, day-in, day-out, is well, sweet as a glass of freshly squeezed lemon.

Once a player hits the sweet spot, and remembers where it is, nothing can stop the money flowing in, with more and more dough added up with endorsements, tournament prize money, appearance fees, and so on. Take Maria Sharapova. She is just ranked inside the top 20, and though she is a great player with three grand slam titles, she hasn't been playing well recently. Yet, because she has so much publicity, and has been in the elite before, she makes millions every year. Imagine how much Serena Williams would make if she had the looks of Sharapova.

On the other hand, a virtually unknown player makes no positive financial impact on her bank account. In fact, it is fair to say playing on the Tour flushes money down the drain for some players. I recently read my subscribed B/R Tennis Newsletter and clicked on an article about how Roger Federer (World No. 3 on ATP Tour) met his love, Mirka Vavrinec. Vavrinec was a good player, at one point ranking in the top 100, but her total career prize money is a head-scratching amount. $260,832. Had it not been for Roger Federer, I don't think Vavrniec would have been able to pay her bills. Her prize money was far less than the cost of coaches, fitness trainers, restaurant fees, tennis attire, airplane tickets, and gas bills.

Sam Stosur, now a top ten player, but a few years ago, a nobody, summed it up perfectly, "Sleeping in a train station in Japan with other players and strapping all our bags together so they wouldn’t get stolen. Using blankets from hotel rooms and pillows from airlines. The things you do to make it on the tour." This quote from Stosur just opens our eyes up to how menial life can be for players under the radar. To a casual passerby, Stosur and her group may have looked like some homeless foreign women who couldn't find a place to stay. And nobody, not even the most delusional being, would want to be without a home.

But travel to the other side of the spectrum and you see the Williams sisters living and loving their lives. They are part owners of the Miami Dolphins, models, actresses, authors, fashion designers, philanthropists. And they are all of those, because they have their big-time bucks. As the saying goes, "The wealthier get wealthier." Don't be surprised if someday, these two tennis divas are knocking on the door to be worth (together) half a billion.

The players on the WTA Tour are divided into two distinct sections, having many names. Mighty and Meek. Powerful and Powerless. Wealthy and Impoverished. I could list more, but I suppose it would get boring. A WTA player in an enviable position is one to bring the dough, but the envious "lesser players" might be regretting their choices of choosing tennis instead of a different profession.

Well medicine and law schools are competitive as they are, so unless the former athlete's acedemic record and test score is good, he wouldn't get in, but that'd be the same for everyone. Medical school actually would even give extra attention to the pro athlete status. If all else being equal, that could be the tie breaker in the admission process.

My point is that while it may seem a harsh life living on the road, sleeping in air port, etc... as you described, this is only the early, youthful part of life. it's full of excitement. If you are a middle age guy doing that, no question it's not good. But this is like young people taking time off to do peace corp or to experience the world then come back to college. If you are indeed good in other field, you can always start a second career in your late 20s or early 30s and be successful. At least I am talking from a US perspective.

Novak Djokovic and His Predecessor

When people talk about the strength of Sampras Agassi era, they were mostly talking about the multiple Slam winners like Becker, Edberg, but hardly anyone mentioned Chang, even though he won one FO and numerous MS 1000 titles and finished number 2 in the world. The reason being he was never a serious challenger to Sampras and Agassi in Slams.

Now on to Djokovic, I don't know what the future holds, but his Slam result to date in the age of Federer-Nadal is similar to Chang. If going forward he cannot deal with Nadal, then he's just not a real factor, but we'll have to wait and see. The only surface he's expected to have an edge over Nadal is hard court, but from the look of US Open 2010, there's no hope for Nole unless Nadal takes an injury break. Even then he will still have to deal with other contenders.

Talent-wise, Safin maybe better. Accomplishment: Safin had been number 1 and won two Slams. Djokovic may finish his career with better credential than Safin, but what you are doing is claiming Djkovic is ALREADY be superior to Safin, which has no basis at this point.

Around two weeks ago, Novak Djokovic reached his second US Open final after defeating Roger Federer in a marathon semifinal match that went the full distance. This was an epic win for the young Serb against a man who was considered by many to be the prime favorite to win the title for the sixth time.

This is a good opportunity to compare Djokovic to the big Russian player, Marat Safin, who dominated in the previous era that featured Federer as the alpha male.

Both Djokovic and Safin excelled above all on the hard courts and have similar aggressive, counter-punching baseline styles. Their lanky physiques are alike, and both are from Eastern European countries. In fact, Russia and Serbia have strong diplomatic ties to one another.

A comparison of these two players will also lead to a comparison of the respective eras in which they competed.

I believe Djokovic is the superior player.

This opinion is backed up by the fact that Djokovic has already won more titles at a younger age (seventeen to Safin's fifteen), has won more prize money, and will probably also surpass (or at least tie) Safin's two Slams in the near future.

Djokovic currently has one Grand Slam to his credit, achieved at the Australian Open in 2008. He is still only twenty three years of age.

The Serb is winning these titles in a stronger era, with big, solid baseliners wreaking havoc on the tour, and the likes of Rafael Nadal and Federer dominating the game.

One of those "big boys" is Tomas Berdych, who ended Federer's extraordinary finals run at Wimbledon. Another is Robin Soderling, who has notched wins over Nadal, Djokovic and Federer.

And yet another is the mighty Juan Martin Del Potro, who has multiple wins over Federer and Nadal, and whose power game is considered by some as the future of tennis.

The Swiss Maestro is still playing his unique brand of sublime, effortless tennis. Only those of limited knowledge of the game would consider his capabilities diminished compared to his years of flamboyant dominance between 2004 and 2007.

Djokovic defeated him in three important matches in the last two years, when Federer's game was not much different than 2005, the year he lost to Safin in the semifinals of the Australian Open.

These triumphs by the Serb came in the semifinals of the Australian Open in 2008, in the final of Federer's hometown tournament in Basel, and at the semifinal stage of the US Open this year.

Djokovic has six total wins against Federer, including a Masters event victory over him in 2007 in Montreal, when the latter was said to be at his peak.

At the US Open final in the latter stages of the 2005 season, Federer lost the second set to Andre Agassi, who was thirty five years of age at the time and had played three back-to-back five setters leading up to the showdown with the Swiss. The first set had gone to Federer.

Agassi was also up a break at one point in the third set, and a lucky net chord off the American's forehand helped Federer set up an easy backhand winner to break back.

By then, the much older Agassi had deflated from all the hours he had logged in previous matches. Had he won the third, the confidence and momentum may have carried him through.

Can one say Federer was playing better in that match and at that stage of his career, than the above-mentioned defeats to Djokovic? Not likely.

Safin has only beaten Federer twice in twelve attempts, his other victory coming in 2002 in the Russian's backyard (Moscow), when Federer was not THE player his is today. He was not even able to gain one set off his rival in their final two matches.

The big 6' 4" Russian emerged on the tour when Pete Sampras and Agassi were winding down their careers, and the main dominant players were Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt (both great, but one-dimensional players) and Federer.

I feel that whole 'Federer era' was not of the same calibre as the current one.

The Swiss took advantage of a volatile, inconsistent Safin, a powerful, but limited Roddick, who did not have the versatility from the baseline to back up his massive serve, and a counter-punching Hewitt, possessing not a single big weapon that could trouble Federer.

He won six Slam finals against these players.

In comparing Safin and Djokovic's games, one notices a similarity in their baseline approach. Both thrive on their strike-first abilities on the hard courts.

Safin was known for his phenomenally huge groundstrokes off both wings, and his big serve, one of the finest of all time. But he was inconsistent in extended rallies, his impatience getting the better of him as he went for broke to end points.

Djokovic can produce similar weight behind his shots—though he was superior to Safin in both the consistency and depth of his groundstrokes.

When the Serb first broke onto the tour, it was the great length of his shots that set him apart from his peers. He is able to find the lines time and time again.

His serve is a great weapon as well, and when he is on his game, the accuracy of this shot is rarely matched.

In terms of movement, Djokovic is equal to both Nadal and Gaƫl Monfils in athletic ability, and certainly surpasses his predecessor, Safin, in this regard. Djokovic in full flight on a hard court is a sight to behold.

Safin and Djokovic met twice on the tour, with the Russian winning both matches: at the Australian Open in 2005, and in the second round at Wimbledon in 2008. However, these two matches mean little with regards to their overall abilities.

Djokovic was a mere lad of eighteen in the first encounter, and he played below his best on his worst surface in the second. The top seeds are sometimes vulnerable in the early rounds as they adapt to the new environment, and this match was no exception.

Federer was almost a first round casualty at Wimbledon this year. And Boris Becker and Hewitt actually lost in the same round, failing to defend their Slam titles as they fell to lesser foes.

Djokovic plays a more defensive baseline game than Safin did and was not as gifted a shotmaker, nor does he have as much power. Safin was one of the only guys who could ever push Fed around, and though Novak has beaten Fed before, he hasn't done so with the same aggression that Safin did. Djokovic's serve isn't even in the same league as Safin's. Also, Marat was a bum after 2005 and only played well sporadically. Novak would have had A LOT of trouble with Safin in his prime when he was consistently playing well. Remember that 2nd round at Wimby? Safin barely touched on his old self and he swept Djoker off the court. Grass was Safin's worst surface, too. It's a shame that Marat was such a head case and injury-prone because if he wasn't, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Djokovic may well finish ahead of Safin accomplishment-wise but I've seen both play in their prime and I think Safin's better.

Had Safin and Djokovic met on a hard court from 2007 onwards, the Serb most likely would have emerged the victor.
I believe that Djokovic is not as athletic as Nadal, Monfils, and Safin. Djokovic does not have natural footspeed. That is why when he runs down a wide ball, he is forced to stretch for it, instead of use an extra gear of speed, like Federer or Nadal. Safin is a great athlete, but he was not the craftiest player. He hits the ball very flat, but he did not use enough variety to change the pattern of a point. He managed to win the slams he did because he was firing on all cylinders when it mattered, and was in peak athletic condition. Djokovic is not as athletic as Safin, but he is smart with his shotmaking, and court positioning. He uses more topspin than Safin, and gets more height over the net. This allows him to give himself more time to get ready for the next shot. He is willing to play long points, unlike Safin, who made too many errors, when the rally was extended. Safin and Djokovic have powerful serves, but Djokovic uses more variety of speed, spin and placement. Overall, Djokovic's playing style is more consistent than Safin's. I want to note Djokovic's one superior quality over Safin. He is hungrier. He wants it more. He is willing to identify problem areas in his game and improve all the time. He trains harder. He competes harder on a day to day basis.

Can Sasha Vujacic Play a Vital Role for the Lakers?

This year he will be playing for his contract again, so I think he may be in for a good year. 2007-2008 was a contract year and he had his career best 8 points a game and even managed to score 20 in a finals game. Next year after he resigned with a bloated contract he completely disappeared. Last year when there were talks of trading him for Kirk Heinrich he had two back to back great(by Sasha standards) games. The trade deadline passed and he completely disappeared again. I'm a huge fan of this turd, I just think the Lakers need to sign him to a year by year contract.

Many observers who follow the Los Angeles Lakers probably thought last season would be guard Sasha Vujacic's last with the team. That feeling only increased in the face of a very active Lakers' offseason.

The defending NBA champion Lakers bolstered their roster with the acquisitions of Steve Blake, Matt Barnes, and Theo Ratliff, so it only seemed like a matter of time before Vujacic was spirited away.

Vujacic's expiring contract made him an attractive bargaining chip in any potential Laker trades. But after the dust has mostly settled, Vujacic is digging in for what may be his final season in purple and gold.

The player formerly known as "the machine" is forced to face the prospects of starting the season stuck near the end of the Laker's bench. Not exactly the ideal situation for enticing any potential future suitors.

Vujacic will struggle to garner significant minutes behind Blake and Shannon Brown, and if that's not bad enough, Vujacic still must regain some of the lost trust of head coach Phil Jackson.

Vujacic was recently a valued member of the Lakers' reserves corp, but inconsistency on defense and the inability to find the range on his jump shot made Jackson's decision to increase the more athletic Brown's minutes easier.

Relegated to mop up duty, Vujacic found minutes even harder to come by during last year's playoffs. But when he was presented with an opportunity to make an impact in the Finals, Vujacic responded by hitting two huge free throws in Game Seven.

Is there any chance Vujacic can build on that success and become an important piece for the Lakers in their quest for a three-peat?

Vujacic will be entering his 7th NBA season and at 6'7" he offers the Lakers great size in the back court. He is also a good enough ball-handler to provide some relief at the point guard position.

Vujacic's best professional season was 2007-08 when he averaged 8.8 points per game, shot 45 percent from the field, 43 percent from three point range, and played in a career-high 17.8 minutes per game.

His downward spiral began the very next year when the disappearance of his shot and his unreliability on the defensive end culminated in a career worst 2.8 points per game.

In all honesty, Vujacic is more fundamentally sound than Brown, the mechanics on his jump shot are just as good as Blake's, and his size trumps that of either player.

But in order for Vujacic to see any significant playing time next season he must regain his lost confidence on offense and approach the defensive end with the same intensity and focus from seasons past.

Vujacic had earned a reputation as one of the peskier defenders in the NBA. Although he still has the same energetic approach, much of the discipline he displayed has vanished.

For someone who used an opponent's emotions to his advantage, Vujacic found himself on the opposite end of that dynamic, as illustrated in the Lakers' six game triumph against the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Finals.

A cheap forearm shot from Vujacic changed the momentum of Game Six, which the Lakers were leading handily. What could have been a potential blow-out turned into a nail-biter instead.

The Lakers were lucky to pull that game out since mistakes are taken a little easier in the wake of a series win, but it certainly didn't help his chances going forward.

The fact that Jackson took a chance on Vujacic in the closing minutes of Game Seven of the Finals was surprising, but the calm manner in which Vujacic approached the situation was revealing.

Vujacic came in cold off the bench and sank the two biggest free throws of his life without a sign of fear and displayed the same type of unflappable confidence that once made him a favorite among fans.

Lakers' fans had grown so accustomed to groaning whenever Vujacic shot the ball that it was easy to forget there was a time when some thought every shot he took would fall.

I'm very curious to see how he does this year. the year he played very well was a signining extension year for sasha. he was the typical play your ass off to get signed then take your foot off the gas once the deal is made.. well sasha is in that same boat again. Like I said im real curious to see how well he plays. If I was a betting man I would bet ol' sasha has a ok season this year. Ive been a customer of League Pass for almost 5 seasons. I think Ive actually missed around 25 laker games in 5 seasons.. its excessive in know. anyway my point is Ive seen these players for a long while now and I think sasha will actually play a good role in winning their 3rd title.

Rajon Rondo Is the Best Point Guard in the NBA

Rajon Rondo is the current MVP of the Celtics and makes his teammates better. A great defender and rebounder as well. But to say he's the best PG in the NBA? I think at this point, that's quite a stretch. His FT shooting is horrid (shot 26% in the Finals--which must be an NBA record low for a PG in the Finals), and his mid-range and outside jumpers are lacking. If he can work on these weaknesses, then I think your claim would hold up.

The point guard position is the most important in the NBA. Not only does the point guard act as the floor general, he is the first line of defense and often a strong, vocal leader. There are so many outstanding point guards in the NBA today, but one is rapidly becoming a true MVP candidate.

Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics is taking the NBA by storm. This veteran four-year player from Kentucky continues to prove waves of critics wrong each year.

Rondo is the best point guard in the NBA; he is the total package. He is the best rebounding guard in the game by far, is an excellent passer, and an All-NBA first team defender. While his his scoring is not needed so much on the Celtics, he is a very capable scorer with either his improved mid-range jumper or beating his opponents off the dribble with his impeccable speed.

Rondo is very similar to Jason Kidd in his prime. Rajon may not have the shooting range Kidd had, but he is a triple-double threat every night against any team.

Defense has been the staple of the Boston Celtics since their 2008 NBA championship winning season. Rondo is at the forefront of Boston's defensive dominance, earning a first team All-NBA defensive honor last season, averaging 2.3 steals per game, and being a nightmare for the NBA's top players, including Kobe Bryant, Deron Williams, and Chris Paul.

Rajon's true value is found in his postseason play. He has five career playoff triple-doubles in only three postseasons. In the 2010 playoffs, Rondo averaged 15.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, and 9.3 apg. His amazing triple-double in Game Four of the Eastern Conference Semifinals vs. Cleveland was a perfect example of his value to the Celtics. In a must win game, Rondo handily outplayed Lebron.

Rondo is the player the Celtics absolutely cannot lose. He is a truly unique talent, and they have no one to replace his set of skills. When Kevin Garnett was lost for the 2009 playoffs, the Celtics were still a championship contender, but without Rondo, the Celtics would not have advanced past the first round, especially in 2009 when Boston endured an all-time classic seven game series vs. Chicago. In that epic series, Rondo was the series' dominant player, outplaying Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose.

Rondo has his flaws too, just like every NBA player. His foul shooting is quite poor, and while he has worked with the NBA leader in all-time free throw percentage Mark Price, there is little improvement in his free throw performance.

However, the biggest knock on Rondo is his outside shooting. Many teams dare Rajon to shoot the ball because they do not think he can consistently knock it down, and they do not want to get burned by his great speed and quickness.

In comparison to other top point guards, Rondo's all-around talents outshine many popular guards. Chris Paul, one of the most overrated players in the NBA, cannot lead a team like Rondo does. He is too selfish and wants to score way too often. Even though New Orleans does not have an offense as good as Boston's, Paul needs to learn to make his teammates much better players because the greatest point guards of the NBA made their teammates play at two or three higher levels than before. Magic Johnson made James Worthy, Byron Scott, and AC Green far better players than they would have been if Magic was not a Laker.

The closest player to Rajon Rondo is Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz. Still underrated, Williams is very valuable to the Jazz, and like Paul, he is one of their primary offensive options. But in the playoffs, Williams has not done enough to vault his Jazz to the next level. The Jazz always come up short, granted they have run into the Lakers often the past few seasons. But Deron should still be able to get what he wants against LA, but he has not yet performed to his regular season prowess in the playoffs.

As Rondo continues to improve, he will become almost unguardable. When he can shoot from the outside with great consistency, he will become one of the top five players in the NBA. His offense, playmaking, and defensive abilities make him the total package and a true threat to become the 2011 NBA MVP.

The MVP award is not a best player award, and many fans fail to realize this. Rondo's value to the Celtics is unmatched by any player for any team. The media and fans alike did not expect Boston to make the NBA Finals last season, entering the playoffs as a fourth seed. But with Rajon Rondo healthy, Boston can easily lift the Larry O'Brien trophy next June.

I remember thinking it was Ray Allen's stellar play that propelled the Celtics past the Bulls in the 2009 playoffs. Without Kevin Garnett they had no chance of contending for the title that year, if Rondo were injured in lieu of KG then who knows, basketball hypotheticals are a slippery slope. What if McHale had remained healthy in 86? Maybe the Celtics would have been the shoo-in for the title, perhaps not.

I'm a huge Celtics fan, but in all honesty, Rondo is not the league's top point guard. His offensive woe's are too much of a liability, especially in late game situations where opposing defenders cheat off of him or he becomes too tentative to initiate contact moving toward the basket out of fear of missing free throws. It was not a coincidence that the Celtics offense would freeze up at the end of games and default to a inefficient half-court set when Rondo became too hesitant to drive the lane; the most egregious example being game 7 of the finals this year.

Rondo is the best defender at the point in the NBA currently, and one of the, if not the most, skilled passers. However, until he develops a consistent mid-range jumper and free throw stroke, he cannot be considered the best point guard in the NBA. Overlooking his shooting woes is too much of a glaring omission.

Celtics Rajon Rondo on the Cusp of Perennial Greatness or Glorified Role Player?

The Boston Celtics are arguably in the most tenuous position as top contenders for the 2010-11 NBA title. Teams such as the Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma Thunder, Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls and the Milwaukee Bucks, have what the Celtics don’t.

All of the aforementioned teams have youth and energy on their side that they can ride into the next 10 NBA seasons. The Boston Celtics are not so lucky; they have Rajon Rondo and a group of veterans who by all accounts are on the last part of their NBA journey.

Rondo has shown steady growth throughout his four NBA seasons and with his fifth on the horizon the Celtics rewarded him for his hard work. He already has an NBA championship under his belt and came darn close to winning a second in the 2009-2010 season.

The one common denominator that seems to make all his progress an afterthought is the fact he disappeared in crucial moments of both championship runs. His already anemic jump shot and free throw percentage causes opposing defenses to ignore him when the game is on the line.

Team USA coach, Mike Krzyzewski saw that and knew that it would be a tough ride for Rondo if he stayed on the squad. This is something that may cause the Celtics to look elsewhere for an heir apparent to Celtic greatness.

In defense of Rondo, his extended season and a lack of a creditable backup during the season had left him mentally and physically drained.

Boston could not go into the upcoming NBA season without addressing the need to relieve the pressure during the regular season. Hence the addition of Avery Bradley and Delonte West.

Rondo should be commended for carrying the Celtics through the first three rounds of the playoff, his overall play was phenomenal.

When the media talk about the top five NBA point guards, he is often considered the fifth option. Even Devin Harris gets more consideration than him simply because of his lack of point production.

This is a disturbing trend that he must rectify in order to keep his name in the conversation as well as the talent level his mind perceives his game to be. His slight frame and lack of bulk does not seem to make him out to be the player that he is becoming.

There are numerous stories of his belief in self overriding what his present and previous coaches have asked him to do. All of them have to varying degrees have a ring of truth, yet this is the one trait that the Celtics are cultivating in him.

It is that stubbornness that allowed him to lead, remain true to himself and earn the respect of his teammates.

Derrick Rose, Chris Paul and Deron Williams know of only one way to lead their team and that is through scoring. Paul is the lone exception who does play defense, but it pales in comparison to Rondo's ability.

The mercurial Celtic point man has just finished a promotional event at Alcatraz, aptly named King of the Rock a one-on-one event.

Alcatraz's, murky waters reflect its past and future; its crumbling walls may very well tell the story of whether Rondo will be a Celtic and NBA great, or another role player who happened to play with great players.

That in a nutshell is the one supreme thing that is the driving force behind his off-season regimen—the quest to be king of the rock in the NBA.

He is the one true point guard that consistently left his mark in the NBA and Boston Celtic record book in the 2009 season. He accomplished an Oscar Robertson type triple double against a LeBron James led Cleveland Cavalier team.

He shattered a Bob Cousy assist record that stood for 50 years and he surpassed Rick Fox as the Celtic all-time steals man.

There are more critics than admirers of Rondo's game; his teams win ugly but he is a joy to watch on the court when he has offensive weapons around him. He has the ability to read angles that Rose, Paul and Williams could ever think off.

At 6'0" tall, Rondo is a freakish athlete with an equally high basketball IQ and is criticized for his lack of offense; yet his teams continue to win.

If winning is and will always be the driving force behind NBA glory, something LeBron James and his Miami Heat compatriots reminded us off. Then Rondo figured it out much earlier than the Miami triumvirate.

He could have earned considerably more money in the summer of LeBron, but he chose the path to a possible Hall-of-Fame career as his basketball legacy.

not only do i believe that he has potential to be even better than what he alredy is. but in my opinion, rajon rondo is already a superstar player. just because he doesnt have a consistent jump shot doesnt make it any different. there are so many players in nba history that did not have great jump shots, but were superstars and hall of famers because they could do other things at a superstar level. maybe he cant score or shoot the way deron williams or chris paul do, but he is a much better rebounder than both of those players, he is just as good of a passer and he is a better defender than both of them. in my opinion, he is a top 3 point guard in the nba, and you can even make an argument for him at the number 1 spot.

Can Anyone Ever Surpass Michael Jordan?

Michael Jordan is almost universally considered to be the best basketball player of all time. His work ethic, drive, ego, and ability all carried him to the top of the sport.Jordan was marketable, that is true. However, if he was a bad player and had not skill and no character, he would not have been successful.Back then, there were other targets that could have been used for commercials, but Mike is Mike and people knew he was special.

He has in many ways become the Babe Ruth of baseball in that he is almost a myth.

Michael is a legend. However, the question is: Can anyone ever surpass him?

In theory, yes, in practice, well let's think about this.Ever since Michael retired, there have been numerous players dubbed "The Next Michael Jordan." While the list is endless, I will list some of the more popular and well known examples:

Grant Hill, Vince Carter, Penny Hardaway, Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James.Grant Hill was brilliant for his first six seasons in the league after which he was hit with injuries and has been a consistent role player ever since. So, basically, he is out of the picture.

Vince Carter never truly reached his potential and was every inconsistent season after season mostly due to injury problems. This guy is now out of the conversation.

Penny Hardaway was also a very inconsistent scorer who failed to live up to his potential as a scorer, but still proved to be a very good all around player. He was out of the conversation quickly.

Next comes Allen Iverson who is the first serious candidate, well sort of. He was a very consistent scorer in his prime and his defense was one of the best in the league for many years.

However, his ego and superstar status found a way into his head and they overshadowed what is undoubtedly a Hall of Fame career. He is very sadly out by a mile.

Kobe Bryant is widely considered to be the best player since Michael retired. He has a great mid-range game and is a winner.

However, one point that goes against him is defensive output. Now we know stats are not everything, but when looking at his numbers and MJ's, it is a bit underwhelming.

In fact the popular stat website, basketball-reference.com, has a statistic they call defensive win shares that in a sense calculates a player's defensive output.

Out of the top active players Kobe finds himself No. 11. All time, he is 73rd (Michael is 19th). Bottom line, his defense is widely overrated. Which is why he is not in the picture for replacing Jordan.

Now on to LeBron James who is the last guy I am going to bore you with. He has great statistics and a widely improving game, but he just does not seem to have the mentality Jordan had.

Jordan was a winner, and since Jordan retired, Kobe is the closest we have seen in terms or that mentality. Now, I am not in any way a Lakers fan or a Kobe fan so please don't start accusing me of either.

So without the mentality, James finds himself short.

Out of all the active players and the recent players, these are the only ones that find themselves close to Jordan. None of these players have reached the numbers Jordan has put out through his career and that should also be mentioned.

Since none of them are up to the task, we have to begin to think of when that one player comes who can surpass him.

It's hard to think that there can never be a better player than Michael Jordan. Not just in terms of skill, but also because of the one single emotion which all human beings share: stubbornness.

The two that are constantly talked about are LBJ & Kobe.

LBJ *could* be (or really could *have* been) Michael Jordan. At the end of the day, the NBA is these guys' employer. Yes, it's their place of WORK. I don't know how many people here on the B/R are over the age of 23 and really work. When you work at a place, you are judged by your worth (value) which is clarified based on your efficiency. So based on how efficient LBJ has been over his 7 years so far, I'd say it's pretty close to that of MJ's career, if not almost identical. However he never closed the big deal. Not even once. Nor does he have the mentality and competitive drive that Jordan possessed. So he's out of the picture.

Kobe can't be as good as MJ. His stats show it. That's the bottom line. He was never as efficient at work. He had the same mind set and drive but he never had the same mid range as Jordan until the 2008 season (late in his career). He also couldn't drive like Jordan (his vertical leap wasn't even close to Jordan's which made Jordan a superior athlete and able to get to the hole easier). Lastly, Jordan's on and off the ball defense was ahead of Kobe's.

One player that could potentially do it is Kevin Durant if he stays on pace. His PER has gone up significantly (just like LeBron's first 3 years...and MJ's for that matter). He has the talent, height, speed, wingspan, etc. The only thing he needs to improve on is his build. If he can put on another 20-25 LBS without losing speed & jump (in fact he should work on his jump and increase it another 2 inches), he'll be unstoppable.

Michael Beasley, Kevin Love and Wes Johnson Will Make a Formidible Trio

A 6'10'' rebounding machine that doesn't need to have plays run for him, can outlet pass with the very best in the game's history, and can knock down open perimeter shots.A 6'7'' ideal swingman that can knock down open and contested jumpers, has incredible athleticism to compliment his finishing ability with speed and quickness, and definitely isn't a defensive stalwart.A 6'9'' combo forward who has utter star potential, can create his own shot, is left handed, can rebound, defend and do almost anything on the court.I do believe it is in best interest of the team for Beasley to play the 3. Those three along with Flynn are the core four for this organization. It is important though for them to establish themselves as the leaders of the team and that they are able of scoring 20+ points every night. Kahn's letter to the fans is absolutely true. They are starting to create a solid supporting cast, but need that superstar to become a contender again. Rubio is going to be an excellent passing point guard which is what this team needs, but not the superstar that i'm talking about. Hopefully one these wing players in Johnson and/or Beasley will realize their potential and become all-stars. Not sold on love being a starter yet due to his size, but it would nice him play a lot more now with Big Al gone.

There are arguments that supports that Wes Johnson would serve better as a small forward, Michael Beasley would serve better as a power forward, and Kevin Love is supposed to be the best role player coming off the bench even for a bad team.

Wes Johnson

As a junior in high school, Wes Johnson stood at 6'2'', playing the point guard position, and grew 5 inches in 2 years, thus the legit standing 6'7'' swingman's stellar athleticism was amplified even more when his wingspan expanded to a full 7 feet.

As a senior in high school he was unheard of, it's nearly impossible to find footage from his high school team, and even his 2 years of Iowa State. But one thing is very clear about Wes Johnson, he's extremely confident in his abilities, but he's extremely coachable.

When asked about his game and what a lot of scouts don't know is that he can actually handle the ball, although you won't see him do it. From his story, Wes Johnson was always considered a starting caliber swingman, but his coaches always used him to play a role off the ball. This ultimately is his core strength, but during Wes' college days, he showed flashes of being able to handle the ball sparingly.

It's evidented by this quote from Wes himself. " I'll tell you this right now. I've been in a supporting role in relation to always being a team guy. And I'm not going to shy away from that. But it's time for me to be me. I'm gonna have that swag and show everybody the real Wes."

The Minnesota Timberwolves run the triangle offense, and the way it's run calls for the shooting guard to be able to make plays for himself (Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant). Wes will step into that role, and I think he will do better than most realize.

Kevin Love

Someone who was a stud in his NCAA days, is even a better stud in the NBA. There shouldn't be much to argue why this guy is a star role player (what a oxymoron).

Kevin Love is arguably the best rebounder in the NBA, also the best outlet passer, and there's a legit shot that he has Pau Gasol like passing skills out of the post. A tad undersized for the power forward position, many would argue that Kevin Love's talents would have put him on the bench on a contending team.

While he doesn't have the lateral quickness or athleticism to defend hybrid 4's, there are many many star role playing guys that played on championship teams, ie Ben Wallace.

Kevin Love has been playing for Team USA, he's coming back with a gold medal and a winning mentality. He's gotton better at taking charges, and rebounding (I know right). He's still only 22 years old, and still has a lot of upside left, don't think that Kevin Love cannot become a legit 17 point, 13 rebound machine.

Michael Beasley

Here's the biggest question. Can Michael Beasley play the small forward position for extended periods of time?

Here's your answer. Yes.

How do I know? Well it's quite obvious, Michael Beasley is playing in the triangle offense, and the way it's set up, he can get into the post and score on smaller 3's, and he can use his speed and quickness to iso slower 4's. But extended periods of time would naturally worry Wolves fans for Beasley to play small forward.

Ryan Gomes was a bit slow, but he was able to average double figure scoring for the Timberwolves squad. Damien Wilkins played sparingly, but he was able to grab double digit rebounds on some nights. And Sasha Pavlovic? Nevermind.

Micheal Beasley can't play small forward for the Timberwolves? Really? Well just looking at him, he possesses and looks quick enough to start and play extended minutes at the 3.

He also possesses superior size compared to a lot of 3's in the league, standing at 6'9'' at the age of 19, possessing a 7-foot wingspan with great athleticism to compliment his star talent.

And yes people, don't be surprised if he emerges as an all star talent this season.

Overall

Wesley Johnson, Michael Beasley and Kevin Love can form a formidable trio. Compared to last season's trio of Jonny Flynn, Kevin Love and Al Jefferson, complimented by Corey Brewer, I think I'll take this one. Featuring Wes, B-Easy, and Love complimented by Martell Webster, Darko Milicic, Jonny Flynn, Corey Brewer, and Nikola Pekovic.

I think it's a forgone conclusion that Love will start at PF and Beas as SF. They're the two best players on the team and Beas, unlike Jefferson, can play two positions.

I liked what you said about Love never needing to have plays run for him. I see so many people that knock Love because he doesn't have the conventional back-you-down post game. But really, it's much more valuable to have a guy in the triangle offense who can get his production in the flow. He gets his points on put-backs and within the offense. If he can get good position, he'll score in the post, if not, he'll step out and spot up. I will be shocked if he's not putting up 18 and 13 this year. With more playing time and a year more experience, that's not even optimistic, that's realistic.

If Beasley does come through, this team is going to be good. They have great wing depth and athleticism, solid point guard play, really good PFs, and we'll see about the centers haha. That's all I can say there, but I'm optimistic about both Darko and Pek.

Who Sets the Standards In Tennis?

Now that the slams are behind us, the year 2010 has clearly been the year of Rafael Nadal. Not only Nadal dominated the Grand Slam landscape, but he has also collected several titles especially in clay season and raised the bars higher for everyone.

In my eyes, Rafa is precisely in the position that Federer was enjoying starting five years back. Rafa has earned where he is by his dedication to the game, attitude towards life and hard-work.The point is both of them are different kind of players and they set their own standards for every youngster to follow. And it by no means is inferior to the other.

Like nearby objects loom large as compared those behind, human mind tends to magnify and place more weight on recent incidents. Nadal has won three slams in a calendar year for first time in his career. Nadal did something unique for the first time during ‘our time’. He won on all three surfaces in the same year.

Tennis writers and so-called experts seem to believe that three slams won in a year is pro-ratable to nine slams in three years. Unfortunately, ratios and proportions let us completely down in the world of sports.

Top Men's US Open Champions of All-Time

In my mind, Federer does not have anything to prove. He has won on all surfaces, played more slam finals than anyone in history of tennis, been most consistent in the history of the game. He also won three slams in a year in three calendar years (2004, 2006, 2007). By far Federer has been the most complete player on court and off-court. Sure, Nadal is nearly there and his claims will have to be accepted once he wins some more non-clay slams.

In the Open era, Federer came to define the boundaries of the game and went thrashing down every single record in male tennis. What is Nadal’s gain is not Federer’s loss, because the duo did not meet once in slams during 2010. For the first time in his non-clay Grand Slam career, Nadal had to remember the name of the guy on the other side in a slam Final as it was anything sounding like Roger Federer.

It was Roger Federer who set the standards for Tennis and continued to inspire youngsters. The winner of US Open 2010 Del Potro said after winning that his ambition is to be able to play like Federer.

With Federer though- he didn't jsut prove he was good on hard and grass and the one win on Clay is all he did there to make him a complete player.. You forget- Federer is easily the 2nd best clay courter of his generation next to Nadal.. He's a multiple finalist at the French and has won it one time. He's also won all the other slams many multiple times.

Nadal has now won the US Open- and he should be left alone, but the knock on him before is that he never even reached the finals..... nor has he reached the finals of Australian other than his 1 win...... So there is a difference in terms of complete player, multiple winner at three slams including runnerups, and multiple runner up and 1 time winner of the 4th slam shows complete consistent play on all surfaces.

Nadal has proved that he is the worthy successor. He would most possibly push the bar some notches higher. Both of them have inspired people of all ages for the things they've accomplished on and off the tennis court. Roger is my favorite tennis player ever, but Rafa has worked hard to achieve what he has and is now the one everyone will have to catch up to. That's life. It's what makes things fun. Why do we have to make everything adversarial all the time? Without both of these players in it, the game is diminished.

How To Buy A Good Juicy Bags?

I think you must know the Juicy Bags. It is a famous brand all around the world. A lot of people especially women have deep interest in juicy couture.

Actually, Juicy Couture is a West Coast fashion company selling its lines of modern casual and sportswear and accessories. There lines have a perfect touch of class and style. The Juicy name became well-liked when Hollywood celebrities began wearing their clothes and carrying their bags.

With the popularity of their line came the push of cheap fakes. So if you go buying your first Juicy Handbag take care and look for the following pitfalls. I will show you the important thing when buy your ideal juicy couture.

First, when purchasing a Juicy Bag, look for dark not very glossy leather. The leather is softer and thinner cheaper bags are created of thicker rougher leather.Secondly, you should look inside the bag and check to see if the lining is soft cotton. If it has an inexpensive synthetic lining that isn’t smooth and versatile, it is probably a fake.

Next, take a look at the stitching on the bag check if it has been done cleanly and with a good stitch. If the bag looks like it has been rushed with the machines it probably may be a fake.

Lastly, if the bag seems to be too cheap it probably is really a fake. Remember a high quality bag takes fine quality materials and workmanship and cannot be sold cheaply.

Take care and remember the tips when you shopping your Juicy bags. And get the best one for yourself.Happy shopping!
